NATO is the North Atlantic Treaty Organization which is 28 countries that are committed to fulfilling goals of the North Atlantic Treaty. Feburary 8, 2012 NATO led forces in Afghanastan to accidentily kill 8 children in a village called Giawa, during a scheduled air strike. After the attack, the afghanastan government released very graphic pictures of seven boys, ages ranging between 6-14 who were brutally killed in the air strike. There been pressure lots of pressure put on NATO from the government and from the president Mr.Karzai, to stop killing innocent civilians. Along with the killings in village, there were 7 more civilians killed by NATO in the province of Kunar. As a result of all of the civilian killings, the number of dead civilians rose from 2,790 in 2010, to 3,021 in 2011. Not only is this a major problem that Afghanistan is facing, but also the recruitment of child suicide bombers. In my opinion, because NATO is such an elite and powerful organization, I think that more planning needs to be put in place before having an air strike. Innocent children are dying all the time because of battles they probably don't even understand. I think that children should not have to suffer because of NATO's irresponsibility. What shocks me the most is that there have been many reports of NATO killing civilians, yet out of the 28 countries involved NATO is still in business.
This makes me really sad! I definitely think that no child should be killed as a casualty. I agree with Molly that NATO, which is supposed to be like an international police force, killing innocent children is something that needs to be dealt with. It's terrible that NATO has almost sunk to the level of the Afghani's who are using child suicide bomber, by not being more careful about killing innocent children
This article serves to show the purpose that war is not merely about the recruited soldiers, but that it invloves so many more other people. It is in situations like these were the innocent of society are affected and they become statistics, labelled "collateral damage" that people need to come to the realization that war is not just about world politics; it is about the heart. For the parents of the children who were killed the word "accident" does not ease their sorrow so why should it ease the repercussions that the perpetrators should face?
It honestly shocks me that NATO, such a powerful organization, cannot be more careful when going into villages, such as Giawa. I completely agree with Tari when she stated "...the word 'accident' does not ease their sorrow..." What really got to me though, was when I read that Brigadier General Carsten Jacobson stated that any deaths of innocent lives is a tragedy when NATO's civilian death count for 2011 is 3,021. Something needs to be done about this.
