Week four:State Keeps Death Files of Abused Children Secret

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/29/nyregion/nys-evades-requirement-for-disclosure-on-childrens-deaths.html?_r=1&scp=1&sq=children&st=cse

In 1995 Elisa Izquiere (6 yrs) was killed by her own mother, led to changes in the New York City's child welfare system. In which created the Elisa law which allows less secrecy, and more investigations. In 2008, it was decided that if a child was killed who had other siblings in the household the fatality reports weren't released. The state issues about 250 fatality reports each year, And in 2010, two-thirds of the reports issued in New York City involved homes with multiple children, which meat that under the new policy, officials could keep information about their deaths private. I personally believe that any child that dies due to abuse should be made public. I believe that everyone should know the kind of person the abuser is and the acts that they have committed towards the child. I think by keeping their deaths secret it is protecting the abuser rather than the child. These children died for no unjustifiable reason, and that their stories should be heard.

  1. I agree that child abusers should be made public, not just because the children's stories should be heard, but also to prevent these abusers from committing these acts again. If the public knows about these people, they can play a role in keeping children away from these people.

  2. I think that the government's priority's should always put children first because they are our future. I think that if the government lets abusers be protected from the public then we are no longer protecting the children. I don't think that a child who was abused should ever have to be quiet about it and that al abusers should be known to the public so children can be safe.

  3. I think that these types stories should not be kept quiet not only to make the public aware, but also in remembrance of all the poor little souls that have been lost. For all the injustice that was done to Elisa, the least that can be done is telling the world of her tragedy. I hope the government works hard to keep other children like Elisa safe from abusive parents.
