Week Nine:5 year Old Girl Dies of Cough Medicine Overdose

Kimber Michelle,5, took a deadly combonation of cold and allergy medicine while under the care of her grandmother. Reports ruled the overdose was accidental, caused by dextromethorphan, an ingredient commonly used in cough syrup. Her blood levels were two and a half times higher than the recommended dosage. It has been suggested that Kimber might have taken some medication herself or that her grandmother gave her the wrong dosage. Toxicology reports show that Kimber, who weighed only 46 pounds, had 96 nanograms per millilitre of dextromethorphan in her blood. The upper limit for this drug in adults is 40 ng/ml. I personally believe that this story should be very public, to gain awareness of the dangers that come along with taking over the counter medicine, especially with children.

  1. It is difficult for me to comprehend how a five year old is able to ingest that much cough medicine. Was there no supervision? How was this little girl able to open a bottle of cough medicine by herself? These are very suspicious circumstances that require more investigation.

  2. I agree with Molly this story does need to be public because it will help parents become aware that cough medicine and allergy medicine can still be dangerous even though they are used so often. I also agree with what Tari said, investigation needs to be done. How can this 5-year-old open a medicine bottle herself? I question too whether there was supervision taking place. Could this not have happened if she was supervised, she is only 5.

  3. I think that this is terrible and if the 5 year old girl did some how get into the bottle herself then i think that, that's a sign that parents need to start putting all of there medicine in a high cabinet and keep it locked at all times because this is unacceptable. But if after the investigation it turns out that it was the grandmother then she needs to be put in prison because she obviously knows how much medicine she needs to give her grand-daughter.

  4. I am rather confused over the fact that the drug companies neglected to inform customers that mixing their medicine with others could potentially be lethal. When it comes to the grandmother however, I understand that mistakes can be made, or that children can get into things themselves.

  5. This is a very sad event to have happened to such a young girl, but her grandmother should have been keeping better track of her and should have hid the medicines out of reach of the girl.

  6. I think the drug companies need to put more labeling on their bottles. A 5 year old girl died because of their mistake. I also agree an investigation needs to be done. I doubt the grandmother wanted to kill her granddaughter but the circumstances are still strange. How could this girl ingest so much medicine she died.
