Week eleven: Vatican Inquiry Reflects Wider Focus on Legion of Christ

VATICAN CITY
VATICAN CITY — The Legionaries of Christ, a powerful but troubled worldwide religious order whose founder became involved in a sex scandal years ago, said on  Friday that the Vatican was investigating seven Legion priests over allegations of sexual abuse of minors. , the Rev. Marcial Maciel Degollado, the abuser, who fathered several children, abused seminarians and misused funds. The pope removed Marciel from priestly duties; he died 2 years later. Even though this man is dead, it is crazy that the story is only coming out now. Those must have been completely traumatized, and who would believe their story? I personally it is ridiculous that people who are supposed to be working and serving god are sexually abusing young children. If people that are so highly respected are doing this, imagine the people no one knows about.

  1. The catholic church has been wreaked by allegations of child abuse, sodomy and molestation in the past several years. This is ulimately heartbreaking when the men of God, selected to represent him and his word cause such pain and heartache to the innocent. These are revered men involved in atrocious acts. I cannot begin to contemplate the sorrow they caused, and I believe the punishment they receive should be immensely great.

  2. Sadly, I am not surprised that this is happening. I have heard many stories of leaders in catholic churches abusing children. I believe it is because priests are not allowed to be married so they miss having sexual pleasure, so they turn to children to fulfill them. It is just sick. A "man of God" should not being taking advantage of children. Even though Maciel didn't receive much punishment here on earth, he is paying a much more painful price now that will last for all eternity.

  3. I think this is the worst thing. People who say they are working for God can not be harming children. I find it disgusting that children come to a church to find sanctuary and guidance, find only more hurt and terrible things.
